Up at 5:30 for a 7:00 breakfast meeting. That was lovely. But I’m surprisingly awake. I walked into my office and my secretary had a gift for me on my desk. She got me a cat calendar and a dry erase board for my office door that says “Princess” on it. Then I went to my honors class and the kids had all signed a card for me. Very sweet – considering they’re all freshmen and BARELY know me since school’s just begun practically. Then a co-worker took me to lunch at a new place and she bought my lunch. In my afternoon class – all hell broke loose!

The afternoon class is ALL theatre kids. I don’t think I need to say much more about them, they are typical theatre kids. However, they are the coolest and most awesome people – all theatre people are – that’s why I gravitate to them. Any-whooo, there are like 60 of them, they all sang “Happy Birthday” to me – then I got gifts! I got a tiara with some matching earrings, a perfectly princess doll with lots of clothes, a princess calendar, stickers, body tattoos, glitter nailpolish, glitter lipstick, glitter body gel, glitter body powder, coupons to Sonic, home-made Snickerdoodle cookies, a blow pop, a ring pop, and a princess color book with new markers. Can you say MOTHER LOAD?!?!?

Then I come home and my brother and SIL sent a box of awesome stuff – boys are smelly socks, chicks rule socks, kitty post-it notes, cool notecards, boys are smelly lipgloss, drama queen lipgloss, trendy wendy shower stuff, princess mints, disco queen flip-flops, and a Barnes and Noble gift certificate!

Then Mark came home and had to give me stuff – I’ve already got a princess lunch box, a Mr. Potato Head, a Tea book, a furry monkey pen from him- and then this afternoon he gave me two glitter pens, a happy bunny notebook, a pink pencil with pink fuzzies at the end, a pencil with bubbles at the end of it, and a Writer’s book. And my birthday’s not even till tomorrow!!!!!!! I like to celebrate my birthday like Hanukkah – 8 nights of presents!

Tonight we have to do comedy -then we’re going out to eat at one of our fave places. Tomorrow Mark has an MRI scheduled in the afternoon, so we’ll do lunch before that and then we’ve got dinner reservations at this super fancy place at 6. We’ve only been to this place once before. This couple took us there when we first moved here. We’ve never been back. We got a $100 gift certificate from a student as a Christmas gift, so we’re using it. I don’t even know if $100 will be enough money – this place is like $50 a plate and stuff. Yikes! I’m excited. Heck, it’s free for us!!!

So, today has been a good day. I know the whole weekend will be good. Since Mark was so sick last year’s birthday wasn’t so good – this is totally making up for it!

I have a really great group of students this year, but they were starting to get on my nerves a little bit this morning. They DO NOT understand how to do the first paper – let me see if you can catch on: Read Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing and then compare/contrast the dating/courting habits in the play to the dating/courting habits of today. Isn’t that clear? I damn near started writing the paper for them in class today. URGHH!! I am not sure if they’re truly not understanding or if they are stressed that this is the first paper of the semester. I don’t know, but they stressed me a little. So, I have given them an extension because they ALL seem so clueless. Oh well, I guess/hope they’ll all be working extra hard this weekend – we’ll see…

On other news – I got a bracelet maker thingy from Mark for my bday. It’s hard to explain, but I need to sit my butt down and start playing with it. It’s gonna be fun. The colors of the strings and beads are great too. Some of my students gave me a card and a tiara for my bday. They want me to wear it tomorrow to classes. I’m sure I will – it won’t be the first time I’ve done something odd. And it won’t be the last.

Tomorrow night we have to do comedy. It’s an awful odd venue though. We are taking our improv troupe to a meeting and we are the entertainment. I don’t know – the average age will be early 60s, mostly men, dressed in suits, they will be liquored up though – that always helps. But, I don’t know how it’s gonna go. We are gonna do something quick and get the heck outta there. I am a little stressed because it’s unusual, but that’s part of improv I guess

I have a 7 am meeting tomorrow. Yikes! Better set the alarm and put it on extra loud so I don’t oversleep. That’s gonna be EARLY!!!! I can do it though. At least there will be coffee and breakfast. What more can I ask for?

Ah me, I stayed home from work today – guess it was a mental health day for me. I slept a lot – must’ve needed it. I also did a little shopping. Tonight I need to get some homework done.

Mark is doing a little better today actually. We called the doctor’s office but we never got anyone to schedule an MRI for us – lovely, huh? We’ll try again tomorrow.

But for now, I think I need a little something to eat – if I get bored/have time, I’ll write more later.

Well, it looks like we’re back to taking Mark to the doctor’s. It was the exact same thing a year ago. He had his surgery on September 17 2003. Today we headed to the neuro-surgeon again. I called first thing this morning and begged for an appointment. He is getting worse, and we obviously waited much too long last time. So, we decided we needed to do something now. They said we would have to have xrays before the appointment. I ran and found Mark – we quickly cancelled our classes and made plans for the afternoon classes and drove as quickly as possible to the hospital. Of course they were slower than molasses. Good grief! We were there for an hour and a half. We had a 10:15 xray appointment. We left the hospital with our xrays at 11:45. Needless to say we were mighty late. I felt horrible. There I was begging to get in to see the doc and we show up late. I kept calling and apologizing. I even made the hospital call and explain how ridiculously slow they were. It was ok – no one was mad, and it didn’t throw off his schedule. Now we wait for an MRI. They are scheduling something for us and then they’ll call and let us know what they have open. We will most likely have to miss work again and sit in the hospital. Good times. The doc seems to think it’s something with his C4 or C7 on his spine. He has the weakest spinal cord in the world. It just collapses with a little bit of pressure. So, it looks like that may have happened again. They strengthened C5 and C6 last time – because that’s where it collapsed, but we’ll see what’s going on with this now. He can’t keep having his spinal cord collapsing every time someone touches him. I don’t know what we need to do to keep it from weakening ever time we turn around.

But at least we know we have a great doctor. He’s funny and he makes us laugh. Plus he has great shoes! I’m not much of a male shoe person, but his are outstanding. I’ve never seen the same pair twice. It’s like he walked right out of a magazine with those shoes. So, tonight we’re gonna get stuff done around here and chill out. I think I’ll probably head to bed early. Today stressed me out a little bit.

Today was an awesome day. At our house we celebrate birthday “month” . Now that doesn’t mean the entire month of September is mine – it’s just that a week or so before and after my birthday is all for me. Today was kind of the start of it all. We started off by going shopping. I went to thrift store while Mark shopped for gifts for me at another place. We then went shopping for stuff for all my upcoming swaps. Then we had lunch at this pizza place for their lunch buffet. It was crazy there – so busy and crowded. Then we went grocery shopping and came home to take a little nap. Dinner was kind of a fend-for-yourself thing. So I had artichokes. MMMM! I love them! Then Mark gave me two of my birthday gifts!! I know it’s early, but we can never ever wait! I got this awesome lunchbox! It’s a metal kind with Snow White, Belle, and Cinderella on it. I have it all filled and ready to go for tomorrow. Then he gave me a Mr. Potato Head! I love it! It’s so cute. I’ve decorated him and he’s going to school tomorrow. He’ll look great in my office. Tonight I need to do homework and take it easy. It was a fun day! I don’t think I’ll get more gifts till later in the week. Which is fine – I will love using my lunch box though.

I have such icky allergies this time of year. I have sinus headaches and my head feels so full and heavy. It didn’t help much that we were sitting out at the football game for about 6 hours. We went to tailgate and then headed in to the game and ended up tailgating some more. So, I am stuffed up. I took something so it’ll kick in before I try sleep.

The football game was good – we won! I really love football weather too. But – this was NOT football weather. It was hot and sunny. We were all hot and sticky before the game. Luckily our seats are in the shade, so it was nice.

We had a really good time in KC last night. We headed up there with no problems. We made good time. We then quickly went to dinner with everyone. Then we got to the theatre early. We actually were about 30 minutes early. We weren’t sure where we were headed, plus there was lots of construction, and we were afraid we would have to deal with detours. We had enough time to practice and run things. We then headed off to wait. But then – a friend of ours from KC showed up! We hadn’t seen him in ten years! We’ve emailed but haven’t seen each other. It was wonderful to see him. Then my mom, brother and SIL walked in! That was great. So, we had lots of visiting to do. The students were so funny. They were kind of amazed and anxious to meet my family. I think they think we don’t have family – we just go to school every day and no life outside of college. They stood there and stared at my family like they were looking at zoo animals. It made me laugh. Well, the sad part of the deal – our total audience count was 11! That’s it! We did a hell of a job though. It was our best show. So we were happy. Then we had a question and answer period afterwards. That was ok – some comments were odd.

We then headed back to drop off the kids at the hotel. We had a lot of things to discuss with them – they had to stay in the hotel, they weren’t supposed to leave and they had to be quiet in their rooms. So, Mark and I headed off to have a late dinner with my family. We had a really good time. When we got back to the hotel the students were totally behaving. They had gone swimming and were sitting in the rooms and watching TV, talking, visiting with people on their cells – just boring stuff. We went to bed around midnight. We got up at 8 and quickly showered. We all loaded into the van by 8:30 and headed home. Come to find out the kids stayed up ALL night! They asked the guy at the front desk if they could have continental breakfast at 4:30. He let them! They could only have cereal and milk, but they were happy. The rest of the night they wandered the halls, sat outside and smoked, watched TV and talked in the hallway. So, they slept the whole way back. It was very quiet.

When we got home we took a quick nap and then started getting ready for the football game. We got there at 5 and our party began. It was a good adventure in KC. The play was a success, and we were happy with the results. I’m not sure if he’ll get the feedback he was expecting, but at least this is good resume material for everyone.

We plan on sleeping in. We have DVDs to watch and yardwork to do. I need to do laundry. And that’s it. So, I hope to curl up and watch movies and nap all day long. I should get some killer knitting done if we really watch all three movies tomorrow. I got a lot done on the trip up to KC. Not much on the way back home. I was tired and kind of zoning out and didn’t feel like knitting.

Monday I need to do some housecleaning. But we plan on shopping. Mark wants to go birthday present shopping for me, and I need to get things for upcoming swaps. I’m pumped about that! I love shopping for other people!!!

Ok, I need to get going. My head is feeling better and I’m starting to fall asleep. I’m gonna grab the kitty and turn in for the night. Mark is engrossed in some movie, so he’s gonna stay up and watch that. Nighty night!

Here is the Friday Forum:

1. What color are most of the clothes in your wardrobe? Is there a particular color that you would never wear? What colors do you think that you look best in (or feel best in)?

I wear lots of black. I suppose since most things go with black, I would probably wear them. I just think I look better in black, which means I feel better.

2. What are your favorite colors, and why? Are you inspired by them? Do you identify with them? Do you like them because of the way that they make you feel? Are there any colors that you totally dislike, and why?

I like black, blues, pinks, purples, greens. I am not drawn to reds, yellows, oranges – but I do like pink and orange together. I like pink and purple because all little girl toys seem to be pink and purple – that makes me happy.

3. What colors are surrounding you right now? What color is the sky at the moment? What color are the walls? What color is your computer’s desktop wallpaper?

My office is dreary off-white that looks dirty. I have no windows anywhere close to me – I have no idea what the sky looks like. My wallpaper is the generic microsoft evening mountain picture.

4. Would you ever try foods that are unusually colored, such as purple mashed potatoes, green ketchup, etc.? Do you prefer your foods to be regular colors?

I will eat anything. The only food in the whole wide world I don’t like is calamari. I will eat it all!

5. What is your hair color? Your eye color? Do most of your family members share these same traits? Would you ever dye your hair or try colored contacts?

According to the box, my hair is medium caramel brown. My eyes are green. My dad has black hair and green eyes. My mom has brown hair and brown eyes. My brother has blonde hair and blue eyes. I DO color my hair – all the time. I mix it up a lot, especially in the summer. I don’t need glasses or contacts, but it would be fun to play with them.

I probably won’t get a chance to blog tomorrow. We are leaving for KC because Mark is directing one of his plays – here’s the link. We are very excited for him. We will be taking our cast up in the afternoon and performing that evening – then there’s a question/answer thing at the end. My brother and SIL are coming and bringing my mom with them. Yippie! It’s like a min-vacation. BUT – we are leaving bright and early the next morning. We also have like 6 students with us that are in the cast also. So, it wouldn’t be appropriate to head to a bar with them. We think we’ll drop them off at the hotel and keep our fingers crossed that they behave. We have friends and family we want to spend time with – but if it doesn’t happen at least we’ll get to see everyone. We will see some of our friends that we haven’t seen in over 10 years. Unreal! That’s gonna be strange. I’m a little nervous.

So tonight we have rehearsal, then we come back home to watch the Chiefs!!! I’ve got things packed and ready to go. We’ll leave after Mark’s last class. I am bringing my knitting to work on. Plus I’m bringing my book on CD to listen to in case I need to tune out momentarily in the van with 6 students!!!

I think I may get a new office!!! Thank God!!! Here’s the deal. I am in an area in the basement (I’m not exaggerating) with a total of 7 offices. Two of them have windows. The rest don’t. I don’t have windows. The two that DO have windows leak profusely. They have tried and tried and tried to stop the leak. New windows, caulk, digging up and adding a drainage ditch – tons of stuff, nothing works. The place is carpeted. Imagine if you will, tons of rain coming in and making the carpet moldy and smelly. Last year they FINALLY ripped up the carpeting in the two leaky offices. Well, it still leaked, but this time the water just flowed right on out under the door and got the hall carpet wet. Same thing – major smelly mold! Plus we have the added smell of being in the basement. It’s always damp and cold down there. Our clothes stink, we have sinus infections (one guy had to quit because he developed asthma being down there), our papers are all damp and flimsy. You get the idea.

We have complained and bitched and moaned about it. But, like any place of business – space is at a premium. Well, one of the women in one leaky office finally found an open office and got to move there. She was starting to get freaked about turning on her PC every morning because she wasn’t sure if it was all wet or not. Then, the other woman in the other leaky office got to leave because all her classes moved to a totally different hall and there was an open office there. Well, maintenance has decided to make one of the wet offices their break room, and the other one their tool room. So now we also get to smell sweaty maintenace people and everything they microwave for lunch. Plus, it’s LOUD in a break room! They make hella noise. We have complained about this too – over and over.

The Gods are finally smiling on us!! One woman in our area got a major nosebleed the other day and spent a good amount of time talking to the workman’s comp people. Administration didn’t like this. Plus, our new President was taking a tour and was amazed at our working conditions! He couldn’t believe there were people actually working in that area. He said we have till November to find a solution! Thank God! So, I picked up the reigns from there – since everyone else in my department was being kind of timid about the whole thing. I decided to just handle it myself – can you say bossy? I met with my supervisor and planned out where everyone should go. I shot for the moon and got approval! It was funny because he looked down at his notes and said, “Oddly enough, you have office spaces for all your colleagues, but I can’t help but notice you haven’t mentioned anything about your office?” Ok, here’s where I played my trump card. There is a KILLER office on the second floor. I didn’t even know it was there until 3 years ago. The woman who had for the past three years has retired. It’s been closed up and hidden and empty all summer long. I told him I wanted that one – and that because I was doing all the work for my department I felt I should get the awesome office. He agreed!!! So, now he taking it to the Dean and I HOPE we get approval. We could be out of our offices in a couple of weeks. That would rock!

Let me explain this office. There are windows! They don’t leak! The place doesn’t smell like mold and make you have sinus headaches all the time!! It’s huge. It’s got a storage closet with shelves. It is in two sections. One section that’s like a normal office, then the other part I will make into a little sitting area/lounge thing for me. I think I’ll furnish the damn thing and everything. It’s out of the way from the beaten path (Obviously – since I just realized it was there 3 years ago.) So, I’m keeping my fingers crossed. My colleagues are pleased with me. Though a few of them are pessimistic by nature and seem ultra-hesitant to get happy about it. I, on the other hand, am starting to think about color choices and where my desk will be positioned. I will need a floor lamp, a fan, it needs major cleaning! But I would love it! I work better in silence and by myself. This would be perfect.

So, hopefully we’ll hear something by next week at the latest. I will have to send the President a thank-you email if it all goes through. Just think – I won’t stink, my papers won’t always be stuck together from moisture, and I won’t be sneezing and snotting all the time. I bet I can stop taking Clari/tan every day. The funny thing is – I don’t need it over the summer, over Christmas break, or spring break – just when I’m in the dark, damp little hell-hole. Plus, if I am in my office for 2 hours or more without a break, I always have a sinus headache. EVERY DAY!!! I will be so happy to get rid of that – I already feel like I can breath. (In case you can’t tell, I’m sooooo excited about this!)

I need help.

1 – I am thinking about doing that Google AdSense thingy and I can’t figure out where to put it in my code. I stick it in there and it’s UNDER the very top dark blue blog line thing. Where does the damn thing go?

2 – What are your feelings about Weight Watchers Core plan vs. Flex plan. I’ve done the Flex plan before and had success. I’m interested in if the Core plan and would like feedback

3 – Go sign up for a free iPod (ok, so maybe that’s not a question) – but you could at least help me out – I helped out someone…

I think our afternoon has been kind of messed up. We were going to leave work early and head to Mark’s neuro-surgeon appointment. But the receptionist just called and said that the doc had an emergency and we can’t be fit in till the end of September. URGH. Oh well. But now what about all our afternoon plans? We were gonna leave, go to the appointment, head to a late lunch, do some shopping, go to the bookstore, and then head home. But now – boo-hoo. I don’t know if we’re gonna leave early and just say the heck with it – or just stay here. I have tried to find Mark, but he’s been knee-deep in conversations with students. I’m supposed to meet him at 12:30 to head out, so I’ll meet him then and we’ll figure out what we’re gonna do. I hope we aren’t waiting too long for the doc to check out Markie. He’s having some odd symptoms again. He basically snapped his spinal cord a year ago. He was soooo close to being paralyzed from the waist down it was so frightening. But he’s been doing well. He can walk – he can’t run. But he’s starting to have the muscle tremors and stuff again. I don’t like it. It could just be the nerves re-growing. He’s had that experience before and it’s been ok. But I’m a little paranoid because, believe it or not, it took over a month for anyone to figure out what was wrong with him last time!! All I knew is that he was losing function of his legs, and some of his internal organs weren’t working correctly either. Right before the surgery he could barely walk. He had to lean on me, but his arms weren’t working either. It was horrible! I’m glad it’s over. But these little symptoms are making me wonder… It’ll be ok – everything else is working fine, and I know the symptoms aren’t anything he hasn’t had before. Nerves are mighty strange things. When they re-grow they send mini shock-waves through his body. Odd, but common. I’m hoping that’s what’s happening, I think…

So, I should probably get things done just in case we decide to head out and play hookey anyway. The weather is awesome and it would be nice to get away, but who knows what Mark wants to do. I can do either – especially because if we don’t go away today, we can play hookey at his appointment in September.
